Hang the dart board correctly - note the height and distance

Playing darts is very popular both in sports and in the private sector. For a comparison of the achievements is possible and competition conditions are established, it is important to hang the dartboard according to the rules. But quickly the question arises, which dimensions and which heights have to be considered. Only by adhering to the correct values is a professional game possible.

When attaching the dartboard, the dimensions and heights are governed by the regulations of the federations and the competition rules. In practice, this sometimes results in slightly different rules for the dimensions. There is also a distinction between soft darts and steel darts. The measurement itself is quite straightforward and requires no expertise. It is important to note the height of the Bulls Eye and the distance between the disc and the ejection line. There is also information about the lateral distances next to the board. Read how to proceed most skillfully and what measures should be followed.

Think about the noise reduction

By throwing the darts and hitting the disc, noises are generated, which can sometimes be a nuisance for neighbors. As a result, you must first select a suitable wall that does not directly adjoin adjacent rooms. Best for this is one of the outer walls suitable. Cabinets and doors create a resonance effect and are therefore unsuitable. An additional reduction of the noise is achieved by a sound insulation, which is mounted under the disc. In addition to commercial products, simple cork slabs or polystyrene slabs have proven themselves. First attach the panels to the wall, then attach the dartboard.

Tip: If you choose the plates slightly larger than the dartboard, you will protect the surrounding wall from being thrown and damaged.

Hang the dartboard properly

height

If you hang the dartboard, then the height is a crucial point. The values given always refer to the Bulls Eye, ie the center of the disk. The center of the disc must hang at an exact height of 1.72 meters. This is a small challenge in practice, as it would be easier to measure to mark the top or bottom of the dartboard. Therefore, a small calculation is necessary in advance:

1 - Measure the diameter of the dartboard. Example: It is a round board and the distance from the highest to the lowest point is 40 centimeters.

Diameter 40 cm

2 - Divide the diameter by 2, so you get the radius of the disc. The radius results in the example mentioned as 40 centimeters divided by 2 equal to 20 centimeters.

3 - If you now subtract the radius from the prescribed altitude, namely 1.72 meters, you will get the height at which the lowest point of the disc must be on the wall. The deepest point in our example is at an altitude of 1.72 meters minus 0.2 meters equal to 1.52 meters .

4 - If you add the radius to the specified altitude, you will get the top of the board. The highest point in our example is at a height of 1.72 meters plus 0.2 meters equal to 1.92 meters .

5 - Draw both points on the wall. The markings must be made in the above example at heights of 1.52 meters and 1.92 meters.

Note: The value of 1.72 meters refers to the regulations of the DSAB - Deutscher Sportautomatenbund e. V. Opposite is a height of 1.73 meters, as prescribed by the DEDSV (Deutsche Elektronik Dart Sportvereinigung eV).

distance

The second important value is the distance between the board and the ejection line. The distance is measured from the Bulls Eye to the throw line on the ground, ie diagonally from top to bottom. It must be 2.98 meters with soft darts. This information is in accordance with the provisions of DSAB - Deutscher Sportautomatenbund eV. Steel darts have a value of 2.93 m (DDV). Since measuring these diagonals can be complicated in practice, alternatively the ground clearances are ready for use. This is measured from the point on the ground under the dartboard to the ejection line. For Steel Darts, a distance of 2.37 meters must be respected and for soft darts of 2.44 meters. These values can in principle be calculated from the height of 1.72 meters and the diagonals of 2.98 meters and 2.93 meters, respectively, with the help of Pythagoras' theorem. However, mathematical control of these values results in slight deviations. They result from rounding errors, since the original was calculated in inches.

The two ways to determine the distance:

Variant 1: Measure the diagonal between Bulls Eye and the delivery line

Soft darts: 2.98 meters

Steel darts: 2.93 meters

Variant 2: Measure horizontal distance

Soft darts: 2.44 meters

Steel darts: 2.37 meters

Tip: In the specialist trade, small chains are offered for measuring the diagonal distance, with the help of which the measurement is simplified. The chain length corresponds exactly to the prescribed distance for the dartboard. If you decide for the horizontal measurement, it must be ensured that the floor has no unevenness, for example due to a different height of floor covering.

Tip: Use a simple string to measure. Cut the cord to the correct size (2.98 m), attach to the Bulls Eye and measure the distance.

Observe clearances next to the window and behind the ejection line when hanging up

Also, the distance next to the dartboard is important in the attachment. Measured from the center of the window to the wall, a minimum distance of 0.9 meters must be maintained. If there is no wall directly next to the dart board but a second dart board, then the distance between the two windows must be at least 1.80 meters. Behind the ejection line, a free space of 1.25 meters is required. As a result, the darter have enough space to be able to throw optimally and to be able to assume a comfortable standing position.

Note: Divergent values are also found in this rule between different clubs. Thus, the clearance behind the line can also be specified as 1.50 meters and the side of the dartboard can be required a distance of 1.2 meters each. There is also a distinction between Dart championships and the regular league operation, with lower requirements for the latter.

A step-by-step guide to hanging from the dartboard

  1. Step: Select a suitable wall by following the notes above on the choice.
  1. Step: Mark the top and bottom points of the dartboard as described above.
  1. Step: In this step, it is now crucial how the disc is attached. If there are screw holes on the side of the target area, hold the board against the wall, observing the markings in step 2. Draw out the holes with a pencil.
  1. Step: Take the board away from the wall and drill the holes for the screws.
  1. Step: Insert dowels into the drilled holes.
  1. Step: Reattach the board to the wall and secure it with the screws. When attaching, the "20" must point upwards, ie at 12 o'clock.

The different ways to hang the dartboard

The dartboard may have various suspension devices. In addition to screwing hooks are also possible, whereby you find here in the upper part of the disc a suitable Einhängemöglichkeit. In this case you have to screw a hook into the wall in advance. If it is a wall made of stone, plasterboard, concrete or masonry, then drill with a suitable special drill and set a dowel. Then turn the hook on. If it is a wooden wall, then you can screw in the hook without dowels.

Tips for quick readers:

  • the "20" must be directed to 12 o'clock
  • Height from the Bulls Eye: 1.72 / 1.73 meters
  • diagonal distance: 2.93 m (Steel Darts) / 2.98 m (Soft Darts)
  • Measure the diagonal distance between Bulls Eye and the ejection line
  • horizontal distance: 2.37 m (Steel Darts) / 2.44 m (Soft Darts)
  • pay attention to noise protection
  • Install cork plate or polystyrene plate under glass
  • lateral distance to the wall: 0.9 meters to 1.2 meters
  • Distance between two plates: 1.8 meters
  • Distance behind the disposal line: 1.25 meters to 1.50 meters
