This little luxury can be done quickly and easily with the following instructions!

Edible glitter

DIY - Making edible glitter powder yourself

Sparkling cake and pastry creations always look so much more professional and elaborate in pastry shops. Edible glitter, however, can be easily produced on its own with simple means and in a short time. However, the following recipes have nothing in common with classic glitter dust from sugar - except their good looks.

Both the vegan and the non-vegan variety prove to be absolutely tasteless and low in calories. The additional benefit for the eye does not bring the flavor of your food out of balance and leaves the bad conscience untouched. After all, even the unhealthy ingredients do without the DIYs presented here. Only if it has to go very fast, of course, ordinary table sugar can be used and conjure in a few minutes a fleet glitter decoration. No time to lose ">

Vegan glitter made of rubber HT

You need this for Edible Glitter made of Gummar HT:

  • Gummar HT or gum arabic (pure vegetable fiber, available at the pharmacy)
  • hot water
  • Organic food coloring in the desired tone (eg Biovegan color fun from the organic shop or online)
  • Baking sheet or large glass plate
  • Cling film
  • a medium bowl for mixing
  • whisk
  • Time required: preparation about 10 minutes, drying time 24 hours
  • Material costs : 5-10 Euro (Gummar HT is available online from just 4 Euro, in pharmacies locally the price can be much higher.)
  • Difficulty: very easy

manual

That's the way it goes, the manual step by step.

Step 1: First, add about 10 to 15 tablespoons of Gummar HT to the bowl.

Tip: From the dimension of edible glitter that is sufficient for a large cake. If you need larger quantities of glitter powder, you should mix it in several stages. Too much at once might result in too thick consistency of the later particles.

Step 2: Pour the Gummar HT with about half a cup of hot water.

Tip: The quantities are only guidelines. Even more or less of one of the two main ingredients Gummar HT and water leads to the desired result.

Step 3: Mix everything to a smooth mass with the help of the whisk.

Step 4: Then add your food color as you wish. Start with a little and then gradually add more and more until you like the nuance the best.

Tip: After drying, the color becomes lighter. So if the result seems too dark in the bowl, that does not matter.

Step 5: Then lay out your baking tray or plate with a correspondingly large piece of cling film.

Step 6: Now pour the dyed mass onto the cling film.

Step 7: Using a large spoon, or even better with a spatula, spread the mass evenly and as thinly as possible.

Tip: The whole thing may look a bit irregular. Just do not apply too thick, otherwise you may later get edible glitter with a slightly misted look.

Step 8: Place the sheet on a flat surface to dry. The glitter dust takes about 24 hours to fully cure.

Tip: On an uneven surface, the still very liquid mass would collect on one side and in turn result in too thick particles.

Step 9: After the dry season peel off the glitter with your fingers from the foil and crumble it into smaller pieces.

Step 10: Then wrap the glitter powder in the film by rolling it up or folding it like a package.

Step 11: Crush the glitter in the foil with your hands or with a spoon or similar.

Tip: For safety's sake, you can put a dishcloth over the film so that the sharp edges of the glitter pieces do not pierce.

Step 12: If you want to have a very fine glitter dust, roll vigorously over the wrapped package with a rolling pin. But even larger particles already look great. Here decides your taste.

Step 13: To keep your edible glitter fresh for as long as possible, keep the remains air-tight. It works best in a glass with a screw cap or a plastic bag.

Edible glitter with gelatin

If you prefer to use gelatine instead of Gummar HT, you can make beautiful glitter dust yourself with a similar cost and time.

You need this for edible glitter with gelatine:

  • 1 tbsp gelatin powder
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • Food coloring (hint: metallic colors create an additional sparkling effect)
  • Sheet, plate or tray
  • Microwave safe bowl
  • microwave
  • Cling film
  • Time required: preparation about 10 minutes, drying time 8-10 hours
  • Material costs: 5-10 Euro (apply products multiple times)
  • Difficulty: very easy

manual

That's the way it goes, the manual step by step.

Step 1: First, pour the water into a bowl.

2nd step: Afterwards, sprinkle the gelatine slowly and carefully onto the water. Do not mix or otherwise mix!

Step 3: Put the bowl in the microwave. Heat two to three times for a maximum of 10 seconds until an even connection is established.

Caution: gelatin heats up very quickly. When it begins to boil, the protein compounds break down and the gelatin becomes unusable for the glitter dust.

Step 4: If white foam has formed on the mass, simply scoop it off with a spoon.

Step 5: Now color comes into play. Gradually add your food coloring.

Step 6: Lay out your plate or tray with cling film.

Step 7: Then pour the mass on it and spread it evenly.

Tip: It works best with a brush. It should create a transparent layer of a few millimeters, which may not be too thin.

Step 8: Allow to dry for eight to ten hours on a flat surface.

Tip: When processing, make sure that both your work surface and all aids are completely dry. Otherwise, the gelatin would dissolve again.

Step 9: Finally, cut the glittering board into small pieces. These can be turned into glitter powder by hand in a blender, a spice mill or by hand. Ready is your edible glitter!

Tip: Packed airtight, the unused glitter residue can be easily stored for several weeks.
