A kitchen without round potholders is like a shirt without buttons - you could say. Simply incomplete. Bake, fry, cook - this does not work without heat. So that the fingers and the hand remain protected, potholders are a necessary utensil in every kitchen. But they are not just a commodity. Crocheted round potholders also liven up a kitchen. They become a happy eye-catcher and a colorful accessory with a practical background.

Were the crocheted round pot holders temporarily banned from a modern kitchen, they are now awakened to new life. One could also say that they have been dug out of the moth box and are now experiencing a new heyday.
To crochet round pot holders is to sink into colors and motives and to try new ideas.

There are countless ways to crochet round potholders. But one thing is always the same: the way crochet round potholders. We show you three different ways you can crochet round potholders. As always, our instructions are set up step by step so that even beginners can pick up crochet hooks and rework a potholder.

material

For a practical and easy-care potholder there is only one yarn to be used: the cotton yarn or a cotton blended yarn. The benefits of cotton can not be overlooked here. Cotton is hard-wearing, heat-resistant, absorbent and easy-care. The yarn can also be washed at higher temperatures in the washing machine.

We opted for a cotton blended yarn from the leftover box. So not bought extra yarn, but leftovers processed further. For a potholder usually only 30 grams are needed. Depending on the yarn size, we worked with a crochet hook of thickness 3 and 3.5.

According to our instructions you need:

  • 30 - 50 grams of cotton yarn of thickness 3 - 3.5 mm
  • 1 matching crochet hook

Techniques and patterns

We present three different crochet techniques, how to crochet a round pot holder. Which one you choose is entirely up to you. Each way of working has its own character. As a pattern, we have for half and whole chopsticks, this crocheted three times, decided.

Crochet thread ring and half rods

In our basic tutorial on "Learn Crochet", you can learn step by step the thread ring and half the sticks. Both are very well presented and easy to rework.

Crochet whole sticks three times

We did not crochet the whole stick twice, as normal, but three times.

This works as follows:

Put the work thread on the needle, pierce the stitch, get the working thread and pull it through the stitch. There are now 3 loops on the needle. Again, get a work thread, pull through the first loop, get another work thread and pull through the second loop, get another work thread and pull through the third loop. This whole stick is now a bit longer and denser than a conventional stick.

Tip: In the presented techniques, it is advantageous if a stitch marker is set at the beginning of a round. For this purpose, a piece of yarn with a different color is sufficient.

Crochet round potholders

Crochet an orange

Picture pot holders orange and melon
The roundness of this crocheted circle is optimal. There are no visible roundabouts.

  • Pattern: half sticks
  • Yarn color: orange and white

attack

Thread ring: Crochet 8 half rods into the thread ring and then place stitch marker.

1 round

  • tighten the thread ring
  • Work 2 half rods in each stitch = 16 stitches

2nd round

  • 1 half stick
  • 2 half sticks in the following stitch
  • 1 half stick
  • 2 half sticks in the following stitch
  • Crochet 2 half sticks in each 2nd stitch = 24 stitches

The round ends with 2 half sticks in a stitch. Then reset the stitch marker.

From the 3rd round begins the invisible increase.

3rd round

  • 2 half sticks in the first stitch of the new round
  • 2 half sticks in the following two stitches
  • Crochet 2 half sticks in every 3rd stitch
  • The round ends with 2 half sticks
  • Reset stitch marker

4th round

  • Crochet 3 half rods
  • 2 half sticks in the following stitch
  • Work 2 half sticks in every 4th stitch
  • The round ends with 2 half sticks in a stitch
  • Set stitch marker

5th round

  • Crochet 2 half sticks into the first stitch of the new round
  • 4 half-sticks work
  • Crochet 2 half sticks in every 5th stitch
  • The round ends with 4 half sticks
  • Set stitch marker

6th round

  • 5 half sticks
  • 2 half sticks in the following stitch
  • Crochet 2 half sticks in each 6th stitch
  • The round ends with 2 half sticks in a stitch.

7th round

  • 2 half-sticks in the 1st stitch of the new round
  • Crochet 6 half sticks
  • Crochet two half sticks in every 7th stitch
  • The round ends with 6 half sticks.
  • In this episode you finish the whole round pot holder.

Our round pot holder "Orange" has a total diameter of 20 centimeters. The penultimate round is crocheted in white, the last round in orange again. We have separated the orange slice with white stitches.

Completion:

Crochet hanger - Each potholder should get a hanger. Crochet 15 stitches at the outer edge. Crochet the stitches around the entire mesh.

Frog potholders

Our frog pot holder is crocheted in a circle showing the increase. There are individual Teilst├╝ckchen. This crochet technique is very simple and facilitates crocheting in rounds.

But "The Frog" has another special feature. We crocheted him a pocket on the back of two semicircles. This can be used in the oven mitts and the entire hand is protected.

attack

Thread ring: Crochet 8 half rods into the thread ring. Close the thread ring by tightening the thread. Set stitch marker.

Tip: Take the stitch marker into the new crochet round before starting a new round.

1 round

  • Crochet 2 half sticks in each stitch
  • Take the stitch marker with you

2nd round

  • Crochet 2 half sticks in every 2nd stitch.
  • Work 1 stick in the remaining stitches.
  • The round ends with 1 half chopsticks.
  • Take the stitch marker in the new round

3rd round

  • Crochet 2 half sticks in every 3rd stitch.
  • The round ends with 2 half sticks

4th round

  • Work 2 half sticks in every 4th stitch.
  • The round ends with 3 half sticks

5th round

  • Work 2 half sticks in every 5th stitch.
  • The round ends with 4 half sticks
  • In this process, you work lap by lap.

For example, in the 6th round, there are 5 half sticks, in the 7th round 6 half sticks, in the 8th round 7 half sticks, which are always crocheted between the double half sticks.

The round potholder frog has a diameter of 20 centimeters. Crochet the entire circle with tight stitches for the last round. Do not double the stitches on the visible increases, but always between the visible increases.

The edges are slightly rounded off in this round by the fixed mesh. For the gripper bag two half circles are crocheted. With such a gripping pocket hot vessels can be better grasped, since the entire hand is in a bag.

To crochet 2 semicircles for the back pocket. The semicircles are crocheted in rows.

attack

Thread ring: Work 4 half rods in the thread ring. Do not tighten the circle yet. Crochet 2 spiral air meshes and do the work.

1st row

  • Double each stitch
  • 2 spiral air meshes

2nd row

  • 1 half stick
  • Crochet 2 half sticks in 1 stitch
  • That means: every second stitch doubled.
  • The round ends with 2 half sticks in 1 stitch.
  • 2 spiral air meshes

3rd row

  • Double the 1st stitch
  • 2 half sticks
  • Double every 3rd stitch.

The row ends with 2 normal half rods. You can now see where the double stitches are. Always crochet 2 half rods in these stitches. The border on the right and left will be adjusted accordingly. For example, the 4th row ends with 2 half sticks in the edge stitch.

Work the semicircle until it reaches half the total frog circle. After completion of the semicircles, crochet both parts with tight stitches.

Completion of the potholder

The frog gets two big, round eyes. Crochet a round circle in black and two rows in white. The circles are crocheted as in the example "orange". Before you crochet the two semicircles on the front part of the pot, first sew the eyes. Crochet both eyes with green yarn and tight stitches. Embroider a wide mouth and two nostrils on the face.

Crochet owl

The owl is worked with whole sticks, which are crocheted three times, in spiral circles. This way of crocheting whole sticks does not only look good, it also gives chopsticks a noble character. In the thread ring must be crocheted correspondingly more rods, so that the circle is nice and flat.

attack

Thread ring: Crochet 16 sticks into the thread ring. The thread ring is not closed by a chain stitch. It is further crocheted at the first stick.

1 round

  • Crochet 2 sticks in each stitch = 32 sticks
  • Set stitch marker

Tip: Take the stitch marker up each round.

2nd round

  • Crochet 1 stitch = 2 pieces
  • 2nd stitch = crochet 1 stick
  • Crochet 2 sticks in each 3rd stitch = 48 stitches

3rd round

  • Crochet 2 sticks
  • Crochet 2 sticks in each 3rd stitch = 64 sticks

4th round

  • 3 chopsticks work
  • Crochet 2 sticks in every 4th stitch = 80 stitches
  • So continue in each additional round.

Our owl has a diameter of 20 centimeters. Of course you can make your oven mitts as big as you need them.

Tip: After the last chopsticks, work 2 half sticks, then 2 sturdy stitches and finish the last round with two warp stitches. So the end of the round is not noticeable.

completion

An owl has large, round, white eyes. Two dark lentils are crocheted in the middle of the eyes. Both circles are crocheted with fixed stitches as in the manual of the orange.

The two little ears crochet as a triangle on the outer edge.

The beak is worked as a small triangle with fixed stitches. The beak is started at the top. In each row, 1 stitch is added on each side. The back rows are worked normal without increase.

Crochet the small wings to the right and left of the large circle as solid stitches.
The stitches on the upper part of the wings are slowly removed in every second row.
