When the dishwasher runs out, immediate action is required. Since a large amount of water is used during a wash cycle, this can lead to possible water damage to floors or furniture. In an emergency, the kitchen is flooded, which is associated with high costs and causes even more headaches. The machine may leak due to a variety of causes, causing significant damage that is not easily remedied. Therefore, you should always keep an eye on your machine to minimize the risk. For this reason, it is important to know what causes it.

Possible causes

The leakage of the dishwasher can have a variety of causes that are different concern. Therefore, when inspecting the dishwasher, you should keep a close eye on where the water is spilling, as this is the only way to find out the cause:

1. Hose cracked or kinked

4. Door leaking due to dishes or foreign objects
5. Door seal damaged
6. Overflow dishwasher bottom pan

Tip: Since dishwashers are high-performance appliances, it is more common for their wear parts to break down and be replaced. For this reason, you should first of all check seals and hoses.

1) Damaged hoses

One of the most common causes of overflowing a dishwasher is a cracked or kinked hose. The inlet and sewage hoses provide the machine with the necessary water and pump off the dirty rinse water as well. If these are damaged, clogged or kinked in any way, the water can not be transported and either remains in the machine or runs out. There are the following hoses, which are used in a dishwasher:

  • drain hose
  • inlet hose
  • Aqua Stop safety inlet hose
  • Hoses inside the machine

The reason for the damage of the hoses is often in the wrong storage:

  • on the ground

Another problem is the material fatigue of the hoses. Due to the heavy, daily stress, in the first instance, qualitatively inferior tubes can break and put everything under water. Even if one of the hoses is only kinked, problems can occur here, as the water inside the machine jams and creates a strong pressure through which water runs out. You can easily replace externally visible hoses yourself, but you will need a professional to change the inner hoses. Inner hose problems can be expected if water collects under the machine and the visible hoses are not damaged.

Tip: Stop the dishwasher immediately and remove it from the mains if the hose is broken. Only then can you change this without the risk of electric shock.

2) Wrong connection

It is important that the individual hoses, especially for the inlet and outlet, are connected correctly. If these are turned up wrong and thus not firmly connected, water will escape from the individual interfaces. This error can happen, for example, after changing the hose or due to a movement of the dishwasher. Be sure to stop the program and properly connect the hose to the dishwasher. If the hose is fastened via a screw cap, it must not be forced by force. Simply screw it tight without applying much force, making sure that the screw mechanism is worn.

Note: When using an Aquastop system, you must also be careful to install it properly. Since an additional interface is integrated here, this must not function as a weak point of the running dishwasher.

3) Filter clogged

The filter is one of the most important parts for the functioning dishwasher inside the machine. The dishwasher needs the filter to filter tiny food particles, grease and other coarse dirt that should not get into the sewage hose. Failure to clean it may cause the dishwasher to clog, which will inevitably lead to leakage or total failure of the machine. Always clean your dishwasher at regular intervals to prevent this. Other consequences of a clogged filter can be:

  • dirty dishes
  • unpleasant odor from the interior
  • Water is in the machine

The wear of the seal is the most common cause here, because the rubber, especially in machines that have been used for several years, no longer endures much. Always clean the door seal at regular intervals as stubborn food particles may accumulate, causing it to rot and damage the rubber. However, if the door had to be removed to correct another mistake, it could rarely happen that it was installed incorrectly. The seal can then no longer grip and it comes to the leakage of the machine. Therefore, have the necessary repairs carried out exclusively by a specialist.

6) floor pan

The dishwasher floor pan is the last hurdle before the machine runs out and collects water that either evaporates or runs out during inflow. If there is a fault with the mechanics around the floor pan, there may be a flood of water that pours into the tub. Since the tub can only collect small amounts of water, it will run over quickly and, with constant water absorption, will transfer it to the floor. 7) Siphon connection leaking

The siphon connection connects the machine to the internal water circuit in modern kitchens. The connection is usually located directly under the sink and is made possible via an extra connection, which is simply connected via the sewage and inlet hose. When connecting, make sure that the siphon connection is in the correct position, otherwise the water from the hose may drip or splash in large quantities. Since the siphon connection is not directly on the dishwasher, the excess water comes from near the sink and probably comes out of the kitchen cupboard. That's why you'll notice that pretty quickly.

8) Pumps defective

Inside the dishwasher there are a variety of pumps that are necessary for the provision and circulation of the water. These are:

  • Drain pump: ensures the drainage of water from the machine
  • Circulation pump: transfers water from the water bag into the spray arms

If one of these two main pumps is damaged, water will escape from below the machine. Typical of a pump failure is the leakage of water in just one place. Problems with the circulation pump are mainly caused by foreign objects that enter the pump and then penetrate into the impeller housing. There, the foreign objects make a clicking sound that you should not ignore. In the worst case, the engine burns through and then you have to buy a new machine. A defective drain pump is due to the following errors:

  • filthy sieve
  • clogged sewage hose
  • Foreign body in the sewage hose
  • kinked sewage hose

If this is not the case, the pump is probably without effect and the circulation pump still sprays water into the dishwasher. The consequence of this is overflow and leakage of water over the floor pan, which can not hold these large quantities. Here only a repair helps.

9) Defective sensors

The sensors inside the dishwasher are necessary for the dishwasher to effectively measure where and in what quantities water is needed. 10) Broken water bags
